Presenter & Performer Bio’s:
Melanie Garland, RN, IBCLC (Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant)
Melanie Garland, LLLL, RN, IBCLC currently volunteers as a La Leche League Leader, and works at Athens Regional Medical Center as a Lactation Consultant. Her interest in breastfeeding was piqued during nursing school, and she began helping other mothers while nursing her own babies. She lives in Athens with her husband and two children.
Pat Nielsen, RN, M.Ed., CLC, LCCE, Director, Full Bloom Pregnancy and Early Parenting Center
Full Bloom is the fulfillment of a dream for its founder. Both as a young mother and in her professional life, Pat has been keenly aware of the lackof a community of support surrounding pregnancy, birth, adoption and parenting. She believes that a family's experiences during this exciting and vulnerable time can set the stage for the rest of their lives - as parents and as human beings. Her passion and commitment to supporting "newborn" families comes from her own experiences as a mother to two wonderful (now adult) children and from working with expectant and new parents for over 25 years. High quality, evidence-based education, a holistic view of pregnancy, birth and parenting, and a warm, open and loving style characterize this endeavor.
Pat lives in Athens, Georgia with her husband. She is a registered nurse,
birth and postpartum doula, lactation counselor, birth photographer and
certified childbirth educator. She loves mommies and daddies and babies! When she is not at Full Bloom, she enjoys photography, gardening, quilting, knitting, reading and spending time with her family and friends
Susan Fisher, CNM, Nurse-Midwife at Athens Regional Medical Center
Susan M. Fisher, CNM is an Athens nurse-midwife and current director of the Athens Regional Nurse Midwifery Practice. Her training was at Emory University where she was awarded the highly competitive Robert W. Woodruff Fellowship in 2004 and 2005. She and her husband Kerry are the parents of two children.
Alexa Shea, Athens Conscious Parents founder
Alexa Shea has been working with birthing families in one form or another since she was a little girl. She feels absolutely lucky to be a doula and prenatal and children's yoga teacher. Alexa lives at Earthsong with her two little gurus Elie and Abram. She loves living and working in Athens and can't imagine being anywhere else. Alexa founded Athens Conscious Parents over five years ago as a way to connect the amazing, creative Athens families she worked with to one another for support and
information. It started as a scribbled out phone tree and quickly grew into what is now an active yahoo list of almost 300 members. Besides serving as a valuable community resource, ACP's members are also committed to public outreach and service and have organized a handful of successful events over the years.
Dr. Kristina St.Clair
Dr. St.Clair went to medical school at Emory University in Atlanta, and did her pediatric residency in Norfolk, VA at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters. She has been a general pediatrician in Athens for 11 years. She is a Certified Lactation Counselor, and has been a physician advisor to Athens' Community Breastfeeding Coalition. She is a presenter for the American Academy of Pediatrics's EPIC Breastfeeding Education program. Dr. St.Claire advises employers on how to make their workplaces breastfeeding-friendly.
Musicians: Charlotte Lee & Mandy Jane
Ms Lee is whipping us up 'Tunes for Kiddiewinkles,'a set of children’s music -- something she has wanted to explore for quite a while. Newly returned to Athens from a stint back in her native Florida, Lee’s music draws from any number of musical pursuits, including covering the country-music laments, Leonard Cohen ballads and whatever else strikes her fancy. Some might recognize Lee as the former clogging percussionist and back-up singer for Athens' old-timey band the Jumpin' Jesus Christers. She performed at ATHICA last spring in the Wine, Women & Song nigh affiliated with the Crafting Romance exhibit.
Joining Lee will be longtime Athens’ performer and chocolatier Amanda Crouse, whose performance moniker is Mandy Jane. Known for her kick-butt performances as Mandy Jane and the Jaws of Life with spouse Ken Manring --the pair behind the popular eatery White Tiger Gourmet Food & Chocolates-- her vocals recall the ghosts of Tammy Wynette. A performance artist who has appeared under many guises, in 2005 Ben Gerrard described Crouse's Mandy Jane persona in a Flagpole Magazine Club Notes column thus "Mandy Jane sounds a little like Conway Twitty, and is resplendent in a long red lace ball gown, sporting two six guns on her hips and a gravity-defying blonde hair-do, as she sings "Drop Kick," an ode to football and all things red and black."
