We are happy to invite you to the last day of Nurture: Video and Photography by Amy Jenkins. The afternoon includes low-cost child-care and family-friendly performances, which take place at adjacent Floorspace Creative Movement Center while parents can view the Nurture exhibit and attend the panel discussion of Alternative Education Options by area innovators.
The family-friendly entertainment is sure to amuse all comers with mind-blowing sleight of hand illusions performed by long-time area magician Rick Franceschini, followed by the Creaky Theatre
Company's The Frog and the Grasshopper, a mesmerizing shadow puppet show for all ages inspired by Balinese and other world shadow puppets and produced by a talented band of Athens' own, including renowned graphic artist Eleanor Davis. The story--which demonstrates the power of cooperative effort--is based on a traditional Pueblo folktale with original puppets and script by the company. While these are indeed shadow puppets, it is rare you see shadows quite so colorful as these!
Ironically given recent weather, The Frog and the Grasshopper is set
during drought conditions--and involves the two eponymous rivals learning a lesson about cooperation. Only by working together do their combined voices can reach the Rain God high up on the mountains and clouds. The tale also demonstrates the more general themes of environment and harmony. The special musical accompaniment is by Christopher Ingham, Amy Wisenhunt and Jeff Morris. Theatre members are Michele Chidester, David Mack, Eleanor Davis and Jason Matherly.

Music by Nanny Island follows, featuring the complex harmonies of
real-life nannies Shauna Greeson and SJ Ursrey, with songs like Nervous and Summer's Over reminiscent of The Roches. They are backed by drummer pal Forrest Leffer, who has been known to don a coconut-brassiere on similar occasions. (Band members have been involved in Athens' groups such as Creepy, Dark Meat and Hola Halo.)
The afternoon will round out with a dynamic set by the newly formed
childrens' band Noogeez, made up of members of '80s rock band The Squalls playing danceable tunes from their recently released CD, Galaxy Day, recommended by Flagpole Magazine as "something the whole family can enjoy together. ...the band is proof that you are never too young to enjoy great music." Noogeez CD's will be for sale.
    Presenter/Organizer Bio's
Rick Franceschini has been a practitioner of the magical arts for over
thirty years. He learned and honed his skills in New York, a hub for
conjurers for last hundred and twenty five years. He has performed in
every imaginable venue, from night clubs to swanky social gatherings. He was a frequent performer at New York's Monday Night Magic, the city's longest running magic show. His work in Athens has been extensive; his local client list includes The Classic Center, Oglethorpe County Recreational Services, Bear Hollow, State Farm Insurance, Care Medical, Athens Montessori and Athens Toyota. Franceschini 's work is centered around pure sleight of hand. He uses no gimmicks, gaffs or trick boxes. With dexterous fingers, a keen sense of psychology, and a healthy wink, Franceschini defies our senses. Cards, coins, rope, and other common-place objects become objects of enchantment and the strange. With ten years of elementary school teaching in the Athens-area under his belt, Franceschini's performances for children play on their sense of wonder and curiosity. They are not merely watching a magic show; they are active participants and accomplices to the wonderful nonsense that goes on. And, as ATHICA Director Lizzie Z. Saltz can attest "The kids are mesmerized, as well as amused by his great sense of humor...the patter is half the fun!"

Creaky Theatre and Company is Michele Chidester, David Mack, Eleanor Davis and Jason Matherly. Their first production, The Frog and the Grasshopper, a shadow puppet show for all ages, debuted at the Athens Public library last summer, where it will be performed again this spring in celebration of the library's birthday party.

Nanny Island is a 3 piece band consisting of SJ Ursrey on guitar, Shauna Greeson on bass and Forrest Leffer on drums. They will be playing all original songs that are a celebration of harmony, friendship and long walks on the beach. Their songs can be heard online. myspace.com/nannyisland.

Noogeez is the brainchild of Bob Hay who is its songwriter, and also
performs vocals, guitar, tamborine, pennywhistle, and glockenspiel. Ken
Starratt is on double bass and vocals, Jorma Starratt on drums, Bill David on mandolin, banjo, and vocals, Tara Neely AKA Kozmos, vocals, Diana Torell is violin, bongos, and vocals and Dave Dowless is guitar. More information about Noogeez as well as music samples can be heard online.
